Banquet tables are usually larger than a standard home dining room table. If you are hosting a larger event than usual, such as a wedding reception, family holiday dinner or club meeting, you may choose to buy a couple of folding tables for the guests to use during the meal. You can also use a caterer who will supply the tables.

Deciding on the Head Count

You will want to have enough tables, be they round, square or rectangular to seat all of your expected guests, plus a few extras just in case there is a last minute change in the count. You should plan for enough tables to comfortably seat each guest, while still allowing for foot room under the table without straddling one of the chair legs. At the same time, allow enough space between the tables for servers to move freely and for guests to enter and exit their seat easily.

Tablecloths or Coverings

Tablecloths are an important part of decorating for the event. If you do a lot of entertaining, you may already have a supply of table coverings in various sizes and colors. Make sure that the size of the cloth is enough to completely cover the table and leave a skirt of at least six inches on each size. If you use a white tablecloth, you can add color by the use of centerpieces, table runners or even the tableware that you select.

Tableware and Seating

Leave enough space between place settings at the tables so that guests can lift a drinking glass without jostling the next person over. If you use place cards at each setting, they should be easy to see while standing, as guests move to their seats. Don't forget to plan for children's seating and place settings. Left-handed individuals and those who are obese may require more room or a different seating arrangement.

Table Top Decorations

Even if you start with a plain white tablecloth, you can add a runner easily with a length of fabric in a theme color or design. Napkins can be made of the same fabric. Sometimes, decorations can be the dishes and silverware themselves, depending upon the occasion.

Renting or borrowing banquet tables may save you from the inconvenience of finding a place to store them between events. However, purchasing your own folding or banquet tables means you will have them to use for many years to come.
