From a far perspective, leadership tends to look simple and easy. It can certainly look like there is nothing more to leadership than intelligence. Some people feel that all leadership is is telling people what to do and when to do them. Since we are not the ones actually doing the work, we tend to conclude immediately that leadership is not hard. However, the fact of the matter is that leadership is not that easy. Although the role intelligence plays in leadership cannot be disputed, intelligence is not the only important thing to consider. Leadership is beyond that, and that is what we will be focusing on for now.

We will look to answer how people can become leaders and how they can apply it in real life.

The first thing you have to understand is leadership is not passed on genetically. Having a father or mother that are great leaders is no reason to assume you are a leader as well. While being exposed to leadership at such an early age is definitely a good thing, you must still decide to learn the lessons being imparted by your parents, either directly or indirectly. You will still need to have experience before you can begin to be a leader. Having said that, making the most out of your time in college is a great way to train yourself in becoming a leader. You can't be satisfied with merely attending classes. Going to various seminars and workshops are great ways to gain more insight, as are joining school organizations. You could even go further by taking a position in the organization.

Aside from the point mentioned above, you must also understand the correct way of being a leader. When I say that, I mean that you have to engage in results based leadership. You can have all the most talented people at your helm, but if your goals are not clearly defined, then there is no direction with what you are doing. Leadership that gets results is one that is leadership for results. You may be able to get your employees to do what you ask of them, but you have to make sure that what you asked them to do is meaningful. They must be contributing something to the progress of the organization.

So there you go. While there are certainly other aspects that need further understanding, the ones mentioned above are great starting points for aspiring leaders. Leadership might be complex, but the time it takes to master it is worth it.
