If you own a business, whether it is a small mom and pop operation or a large corporation, your location is an important decision. In franchise situations, they will have assistance determining the best location for the company. If you think a franchise is for you, the corporation will spend time and money conducting market research to determine the best location to open in your area. For instance, are there no burger joints or coffee shop within several blocks of your chosen location? It may be the best destination for your new operation. However, if you feel you would like to open a hot dog stand two streets down from your home, but the road is lined with hot dog restaurants, you will be up against tough competition. The corporation may advise you to look elsewhere for a great location. Even if you do not have the assistance of a corporate research team, you will need to take time determining the best place to open the business. Whether you plan to erect steel buildings or feature a roll up door on your business, it will be the location that determines whether your company is successful and prosperous. If you have decided to open or expand your company, consider a few of the following factors.

First, ask yourself if the area has a lot of foot traffic? It is important people are able to see your business and that there are plenty of opportunities for the business to be "discovered" just by walking by the building. In some instances, marketing may be enough to lure customers to your company. However, having an inviting location people can stumble upon is important. This way, when people are out and about, they can also be strolling by and walking in.

Do your best to find a location that fits with the theme of your business. For instance, if you are opening a coffee shop, consider placing it within a few steps of a bakery. Allow passers-by to bring their baked goods into your shop to enjoy them with a cup of warm brew. You may even find it lucrative to strike a relationship with the nearby shop and pair with them to create deals and specials for those who patronize both businesses.

Another thing to consider when determining your locale is safety. If you locate in a dangerous area you are risking not just the safety of employees, but your customers too. Nobody feels safe shopping in a bad neighborhood, and customers will shop elsewhere if they view your shop as risky.

In addition to the safety of the location, consider how appropriate the location is, or the importance of a safe emotional environment. If you are opening a business that targets children, like a candy store or toy shop, it is important not to locate near an adult shop or bar. Location is an important factor in locating your business.
