Providence is the capital of Rhode Island and although it is the smallest state it historically was one of the first ones to gain its independence. This independent attitude has carried on in the overall attitude of this city. The three schools that will be discussed here are Providence College, Brown University and RISD.

Providence College is the only college in the US that is operated by the Dominican Friars, a Catholic religious order. This does not mean that you must be Catholic to go here it is just the history of the school that has never changed . It was recently noted in the top ten schools for the Great Schools, Great Prices section for it's academic quality to expense ratio.

Brown University is one of the most prestigious Ivy League schools in America located right in Providence. It has just under 6000 undergraduate students, 1500 graduate and 340 medical students. This school was created as the only school at the time that welcomed students of all religious backgrounds. In the late 1960's it created the unusual curriculum that it still uses today where the students design their own course load selecting the courses they wish to take. The students at Brown are referred to as innovative, creative and intellectually restless and liberal arts based structure works well for them. Several famous alumni from Brown are proud to call it\say it is their alma mater and if you are fortunate enough to be admitted to this Ivy League University, consider yourself fortunate.

The last school in Providence is known as RISD which is short for the Rhode Island School of Design. It was created in 1877 for artists and designers and currently has 2200 students. The education here is considered a holistic one that balances professional majors in the arts with a liberal arts course load with literature, social sciences and humanities. RISD students are expected to be environmentally aware when they make their art or pieces of work as that is a big component of the school. For a lot of artistic students, RISD is the best art school to go to and blends in well with the more liberal city of Providence.

All of these schools are quite different from each another and if you reside in Providence and wish to stay there, there is absolutely a school for everyone here. Providence is in a great location on the East Coast close to all types of things that are in close proximity to this special capital city making it an optimal place to live.
