Your food define you. You must have heard this many times when having an appointment with your dietician. What you consume greatly affects your physical strength and your internal metabolism. No matter what you eat; you must eat it right. Calorie count, nutrition levels and the amount of the food you take must be your basic focus when you are choosing what to eat. You must also weigh the food you eat correctly to be aware of what you are eating. Digital scales used at food stores are efficient enough to measure the food weight up to milligrams. Yet, those price computing scales are not enough to tell you the weight of your food.

To weigh what you eat, you first need a measuring scale. There are many types of scales available in the market when choosing which scale to buy to measure your food.

When you are weighing your food, it is important that you weigh it uncooked. Cooked food is lighter than raw food. Take meat for instance, meat loses much of its weight when it is heated as the water is being lost. Also, the more the meat is cooked, the more liquid it loses. However, as meat is a protein source, excessive heating will reduce the protein content and it will not provide high nutritional value. Before you measure the food item, it is necessary that you clean the scale surface. When you are using electronic scales you must clean it before you turn it on because cleaning it after turning it on will make errors in reading. The food that you have to weigh should also be accurately weighed. You must wash the surface to clear away any impurities and then carefully wipe it with a clean piece of cloth to make sure that there are no water residues.

You should also wait for the scale to point to a zero reading before you place the food item on the scale. If you are using a manual scale, you should ensure that the pointer is aligned with the zero reading, otherwise this may show errors. Measuring your food is not only limited to kilograms and grams. Food may be weighed according to the calorie count as well. Today, this is the most widely used method to weigh food and ensure that you are consuming right. Now this may not mean that you will have to leave the idea of eating your favorite foods. You must not give up on that but you should not eat dense.

The best method to maintain the calorie count is water. Mixing water to the food you are cooking will add extra weight to your food yet it will not add extra calories to it. This is the way you can make your food weighty but not necessarily fattening. Soups and greens are a preferable way of doing this. You can take in many plates of such a food without having to care about the calorie count because this is how you will complete your diet, without increasing the calories you are taking in.
