They are also capable of zero-radius turn, enabling them to function to tasks, which require compact and agile loader.

In 1957, the Keller Manufacturing built the first functional loader, surpassing its expectations at that time. It was designed as a three-wheeled vehicle, 2 wheels in the front and 1 in the back. It also allows them to do the zero-radius turn while performing the same tasks as a regular front-end loader. It simply positions the steering operation in the single back wheel.

In 1958, the Melroe Manufacturing Company acquired the rights to manufacture the loaders, hiring the Kellers to further develop the said machine. In 1958, the first four-wheel drive prototype was introduced known as the M400. The term "Bobcat", a mammal defined as "tough, quick and agile" was the name given to M440, the developed version of M400. It is the first model to have both an enclosed drive shaft and double acting cylinders. At present, the term "bobcat" is sometimes used as a generic term for these loaders.
