The Handyman's Guide For Proper Tool Storage
The basic toolbox is the most popular method for storing tools. Toolboxes are rectangular cases about 2 feet (60 cm) long, and about 10 inches (25 cm) wide and deep. These boxes for storing tools can be made of metal or plastic.
Metal toolboxes are sturdy, yet are subject to rust and can accidentally scratch delicate surfaces they brush-up against. Plastic tool storing boxes do not scratch but might not be as rugged. Both types of toolboxes have a lockable clasp and a top handle for carrying the stored tools.
The tool chest is a larger upgrade to the toolbox. A tool chest is a metal cabinet that contains many wide horizontal drawers to store tools. A large or heavy-duty power tool, which does not fit in a toolbox, can be stored in a chest. These storage cabinets often feature wheels, allowing ease in maneuverability in the work area.
Of course when filled, a tool chest becomes quite a heavy storage container, containing socket sets, pliers, wrenches, bandsaws, drills, and a large quantity of screws and nails. Due to this, tools that are used within a workshop are best stored in this type of unit.
The built-in tool bench is a must-have for advanced woodworkers and craftspersons. The tool bench has the added advantage combining space for tool storage with an expansive work surface. Underneath the work area there are often large drawers for storage; above the work space there may be cabinets.
Various tools such as a table saw, drill press or even a small lathe may be attached to the work surface. Some workshops often install tool benches, considering them permanent fixtures in the room. With the numerous cabinets and different-sized drawers, tool benches have sufficient storage space for a wide variety of hand tools and power tools.
Returning a tool back to it's proper place is the most effective solution to any tool storage issues. Forming a habit to return your tools to their storage bin is key. Storage containers are useless, expensive, empty boxes without tools in them. You can make all your projects much easier with an organized storage system and better habits.
