After hours upon hours of using your computer, your computer's performance suffers. It could be a virus hiding in your system, defective hardware drivers, or just simply too many unwanted programs collecting dust. There is one thing that is often overlooked on every PC users system: a corrupt registry.

A misplaced registry can cause all kinds of problems for your computer. It starts from installing new hardware, to a program that wasn't installed or removed properly. In some scenarios, a trojan can access the registry, causing the computer to preform undesirable operations. And on rare occasions, it can even lock you out of your system.

You may want look at third-party alternatives before getting your hands dirty with Windows' built-in tools or a system restoration. Using the operating system's own registry editor, "regedit.exe", is intended for advanced users. To run regedit, go to the Start menu and click "Run...". Then type "regedit". However, caution is advised for newer PC users unless the proper steps are taken to prevent harm to the system.

Free applications are readily available to repair registry problems. While they do the same thing "regedit" does, they can back up the registry before fixing the trouble spots. As an added bonus, registry editors double as a cleaning program that removes files that can be hard to find, such as the temporary folder of files left from browsers and media players.

If all else fails: a system restore is in order. To restore your computer back the way it was, go into Safe Mode by restarting the PC. Upon booting, keep pressing F8 until a list of options appear. Choose "Last Known Good Configuration". This will restore the computer to the most recent settings before the problem occurred.

As suggested, this is only to be taken seriously for beginning PC users. If you're up for the challenge, try "regedit.exe". It doesn't have the same functionality as the software, but think of it as the beginning of becoming of PC expert. But be sure to make a backup of everything as getting changes wrong is bad news.
