Haiti Needs Help
It is estimated that there are at least 200,000 dead and 1.5 million people are homeless. The U.N. World Food Program (WFP) has stepped in and helped feed 67,000 on Sunday and is expected to feed nearly 97,000 people on Monday. This aid is not enough, though. Hundreds of thousands are still starving and fighting to survive even after surviving the initial earthquake. The WFP still needs over 100 million meals in the next 30 days in order to feed those in need.
The European Union has agreed to give Haiti 606 million in aid and the U.S. has pledged to give 100 million. There are already 1,700 troops on the ground giving their support and 2,000 Marines will be added, their arrival expected on Monday (yesterday). Additionally there are 9,000 U.N. security officials attempting to keep things calm between the looters and panicked citizens. The gun fights over basic items are increasing the chaos of the mess. Now, doctors have the added work load of gang violence victims in addition to earthquake victims.
Things in Haiti are not looking up anytime soon. It is predicted that the complete rebuilding of the city will take years if not decades. However, many officials and doctors are not looking into the distant future but are worried about the immediate future of the people of Port-au-Prince.
