The Wirral has a huge mix of cultural and historical attractions, if you are wise you can manage to fit in most it has to offer in a few days but if you're not in a rush, it won't be going anywhere.

Top of your list should be Birkenhead Priory, a Benedictine Monastery constructed around 1150 this is the oldest building on Merseyside.

It would be a crime to visit Birkenhead and not take a trip on the tram, taking the tram from Woodside Visitor Centre to The Old Colonial Pub you can enjoy a guided tour of the heritage centre which has a collection of restored local busses, trams and working vehicles from the Wirral.

The Wirral coastline is broken up by Britain's oldest brick build lighthouse, Leasowe Lighthouse. Because of its position sandwiched between two major rivers, it's not far from the maritime centre of Liverpool on one side and the natural attractions of the river Dee on the other.

In 1888 William Hesketh Lever had built factories and needed to house his workers so he built Port Sunlight Village. Even though the factories are gone the village is sill home to thousands of residents, Schools, churches and hotels.

Shore Road Pumping Station houses a selection of working examples of giant steam pumps built in the 1870s to pump water from the Mersey Railway Tunnel. Free admission allows you to see such great engines as the renowned 'Giant Grasshopper' and a variety of convincing period street scenes.

'Spaceport' offers something a little more modern. A fantastic space museum, this will entertain the whole family. Admission is cheap and there is a lot on offer.

If you want to enjoy the fresh air why not head over to Hilbre Island, if the skies are clear it's the perfect sunny day activity and you will probably get to see the seals making a visit too. The only way to get to the island is to walk across the sand banks when the tide is down but be sure to check the tide times so you don't get stuck or washed away.
