Few women escape getting a yeast infection or perhaps more than one sooner or later. Though pharmaceutical drugs can help, some may prefer trying home remedies for yeast infections. While not life threatening, this condition can be very unpleasant and good to get rid of as quickly as possible.

It is important to know that Candida, the type of yeast which causes infections, is usually already present in the body. It is when body conditions change that allow the yeast to increase that the unpleasant symptoms of infection occur. Therefore, many remedies than can be tried at home will seek to restore conditions where Candida growth is again suppressed.

It is believed that the good bacteria in yogurt are effective in reducing Candida growth. Plain yogurt is best, rather than flavored varieties. Either by eating the yogurt or putting it directly on the infected area, one can return the Candida to a level where it is no longer a problem and the infection may go away. This seems to be a function of the yogurt bacteria and the acid environment it produces.

You may already have boric acid at home, as it is a common antiseptic for minor wound first aid. In solution or paste form it creates a hostile situation for the Candida yeast, which then decrease to harmless levels. It should be applied topically and not taken internally, unlike yogurt which may be used either way.

Another remedy is not a substance but actually the removal of a condition which enhances the risk of infection. Clothing that is too tight and restrictive and not made of natural fibers increases the likelihood of a moist environment for Candida to grow in. Snug synthetic underwear and tight jeans, leggings, and similar clothing should be avoided.

Home remedies for yeast infections include wearing loose natural fiber clothing and making sure the yeast does not have the right environment in which to grow. Acidic substances and those with friendly bacteria, such as yogurt and boric acid, are excellent weapons against Candida.
