Living completely off the grid does require more preparation. A back up generator may be needed for the days when you are unable to generate all the power needed for your home. This will prevent draining your battery system to the point that it is damaged. The generator can be used to charge the batteries so that home power is never interrupted. It is only used when absolutely necessary.

If you plan to use alternative energy in your home, it is important that you choose appliances that use as little energy as possible. The lower wattage appliances will allow you to get by with a smaller investment in your power production facilities.
