Types of Slips and Falls
The first type of fall is the trip and fall accident, wherein a pedestrian would just bump onto a road obstacle in his or her pathway and slip/trip over. This does not limit to just tripping over an object. The banana peel for example, wherein the victim slips down instead. While that would count for slip and fall, it does not. The category of trip and fall covers the area of "if a foreign object exists". Even if it's in the manner of slipping or falling over, if there was a foreign object that wasn't supposed to be there, it would count for the first type of fall: trip and fall accident.
The second type of fall is the stump and fall accident which is caused when your foot is caught in an intended or unintended feature of the floor such as bumps or indentations. This fall usually occurs to people who have a visual defect and cannot identify the bumps and height differences that they encounter in their path. Not as common as the first type of fall though.
The third type of falling accident is the step and fall, where tripping occurs when there is some sort of sudden event that causes you to fall down, usually in surprise. For example, if the rubber mat below you suddenly lost its footing and you slipped. Or even a manhole that wasn't placed well enough, and you fell through. Dropping meters down into the sewers below. This is the most dangerous of the three.
The last type of fall is slip and fall, the most common of the four. This happens when the floor loses its slip resistance and traction becomes quite poor. This usually happens during the wet season or during snow time. Also during hot days, the varnishing off some tiles melt off forming scum-like substance that lowers a tile's slip resistance. Sometimes cases are won due to the developer's carelessness in choosing the tiles.
