The importance of personal branding can never be over emphasized. Almost every source on career building emphasizes it, but there are several people who do not take it up as an important aspect of their career and personal lives as well. The benefit of personal brand apart from financial is immense satisfaction for you are on par with the big names.

One of the main reasons why many do not brand themselves is - the misconception that it is meant only for those who have exciting lives. This is due to fact that personal branding evokes images of people of world renown and many think that only such kind of people can make brands of themselves.

The truth is personal branding is an on going effort for all of us. We are doing it all time and are not even aware of it. Don't we try hard to gain recognition for the work we do? The effort to get recognized and be remembered can be defined as personal branding. It is just that we don't attribute to it any separate importance.

Preachers of personal branding only suggest that you recognize its need and make dedicated efforts to brand yourself. Promote your brand on social networking sites, in your peer groups. Make a statement that reflects difference in you. Emphasizing difference will get you what you want.

Personal branding should not make you feel like a sales man. While there is a subtle difference, the line is thin and you could easily be misunderstood for a pompous, self-indulgent person. Hence when you are promoting yourself, you can be implicit if you can highlight how others can benefit.

Personal branding is not new. It has been there for ever and each of us has been doing it for as long as we can remember. But you have to take control of it from your subconscious mind and promote yourself, like you would a product, to enhance your career and achieve success.
