In order to be successful when writing technical documentation, it is important that one understands that writing such technical information is far different than writing creative fiction, non-fiction or poetry. This is because a technical writer often writes system and user manuals or other technical documentation in a manner which is easier for users to understand. For, when one writing such technical information, one is often writing to an eighth grade reading level which even entry level employees can relate to.

Although it may not require a degree from a four year university or technical college, one may have more difficulty finding such a job without one. However, there are still jobs out there in the technical editing and writing field which one may qualify for if one has excellent English, grammar and other skills associated with same. So, even if one has had little or no training, one need not give up on finding such a position.

In addition, if one decides to become a Documentation Specialist or Technical Writer who wishes to work for a large company, one may not have as much opportunity for promotion as those who start out as an Editorial Assistant. Of course, if such a company offers jobs in both Senior and Junior level writing jobs, then one may still have an opportunity to move up in the company.

Regardless, as far as the writing field goes, documentation specialists and technical writers typically make more money than do creative writers and poets. This is true whether one is working for a corporation or on a freelance basis. Of course, the most likely reason for such higher pay is that the job requires excellent English and grammar skills in addition to the challenge of meeting deadlines.

For, most every technical writing job on the market today requires that one have at least a high school diploma and some college. Also, while a degree may not be required, those holding a degree either from a four year college or a technical training course are most likely going to have a better chance than someone without such training.

Also, while there are several schools offering such programs, one has more options today than ever before with regards to choice of such training. In addition, there also may be technical writing jobs which one can train for through an on-the-job training program or internship. Regardless, the more knowledge and training, generally the better chance of locating such a position.

To this end, whether one wants to work freelance at home in relation to technical documentation or for a corporation, one is going to need excellent communication skills. Such skills include, but are not limited to, English, grammar and the ability to translate technical language into a more understandable form from drawings, specifications and other technical data. Of course, those who know more about such information are going to be more qualified than those without. Therefore, if one can obtain at least some training in the area of technical documentation before applying for such a job, one often has a better chance of obtaining same.
